Aligoté in Burgundy: The Vibrant Alternative to Chardonnay
Explore Aligoté in Burgundy, a historic grape making a vibrant comeback. From the Aligoteurs movement to Bouzeron, discover excellent value wines from our region.
While Chardonnay is the undisputed king of Burgundy white wines, a historic varietal has been surging in popularity in recent years: Aligoté. Whether you are looking for something different or simply curious to explore another white grape of our region, Aligoté is a journey worth taking.
A traditional grape variety revisited
Representing about 6% of Burgundy’s vineyards, Aligoté is no newcomer. It belongs to the Pinot family, born from a natural cross between Gouais Blanc and Pinot Noir.
For decades, the Aligoté grape was almost exclusively identified with the Bourgogne Aligoté appellation, a name that, for many, remains synonymous with a sharp and bracing acidity. This reputation was cemented by the creation of the famous Kir aperitif. Originally, the official recipe called for 1/3 crème de cassis to 2/3 Bourgogne Aligoté, using the wine's high natural acidity specifically to cut through the intense sweetness of the blackcurrant liqueur.
But times have changed! Today’s Aligoté is fresh, zesty, and sophisticated. For those who find some Chardonnays too heavy or oaky, Aligoté offers a surprising alternative with its vibrancy and citrus notes. It has become the "insider's wine" of Burgundy; the perfect companion for a summer afternoon.
Where to find the best Aligoté?
As we have seen, Aligoté is the sole grape variety permitted in the Bourgogne Aligoté appellation. However, it also flourishes in Bouzeron, the only Village-level AOC dedicated to this grape (since 1998). Furthermore, it may also be included in the blends of Crémant de Bourgogne and Coteaux Bourguignons.
The exception: Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru
Burgundy loves its exceptions! Did you know that Domaine Ponsot produces a monopole Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "Clos des Monts Luisants" made exclusively from Aligoté? Because the vines were planted before the official appellation decrees (1936), it remains the only Premier Cru in the Côte de Nuits made from 100% Aligoté.
The "Aligoteurs" movement
A dedicated association called "Les Aligoteurs" is now working to promote and protect this grape. Comprising over 60 winemakers, they are proving that Aligoté can produce terroir-driven wines with aging potential.
Save the date: "Bouzeron fête sa différence"
If you are in Burgundy this spring, don't miss the event "Bouzeron fête sa différence" on Sunday, April 26, 2026. Organized by the local producers (bouzeron-vins.com), this open-cellar day is a unique opportunity to explore the soul of the village. 18 estates will open their doors from 10 am to 6 pm. For €15 (including a tasting glass and tickets), you can experience firsthand why Bouzeron is so unique.
Tasting note: Bouzeron 2024 – Domaine de Villaine

To conclude this exploration and perhaps inspire your next tasting, let’s look at a concrete example. I have chosen a Bouzeron 2024 from Domaine de Villaine. Located just 21 km south of Beaune, this estate is a true benchmark for the region and a guardian of the Aligoté tradition.
- Glassware: Tasted in a Sydonios Universal glass (mouth-blown French crystal).
- Color: A pale gold with greenish reflections, perfectly typical for a young 2024 vintage.
- Nose: The first impression immediately evokes minerality and citrus touches, which then elegantly evolve towards notes of white flowers.
- Palate: The wine opens with a lovely roundness that gradually gives way to a slow-building acidity. This progression leads to a very pleasant and persistent finish. It is fresh and lively, without ever being aggressive.
The Verdict: I can easily imagine enjoying this wine this summer by a pool, as an aperitif, or as the perfect companion to a sea bass or sea bream grilled on the barbecue.
